DOMDECHANT WERNER
In 1780, the father of Dr. Franz Werner, the renowned ‘Domdechant’ (dean) of the Cathedral of Mainz, acquired the Hochheim wine estate from Count York. Domdechant Werner is credited with having saved the cathedral from being demolished during the French Revolution and was responsible for its reconstruction. Today, the estate still bears his name and is owned and operated by the 7th generation of the family.
The Wines: Riesling through and through ‘100% Riesling pure’; rich in extract, with elegant fruit aromas and harmonious acidity. They have many styles from innovatively dry to lusciously sweet. All have excellent ageing potential.
The Vineyards: 12.5 ha/31 acres, all facing south, on gentle slopes of mineral-rich soil: 90% of this terroir has been officially classified as being suitable for wines of distinguished quality, i.e.Erstes Gewachs or ‘First Growth’, 98% Riesling, 2% Spatburgunder (Pinot Noir).
The picturesque estate, with its classical manor house and vaulted cellars, is well worth seeing.
